THE GOOD INTENTIONS

Documentary by Beatrice Segolini / 84’ / 2016
Role: DIRECTOR / EDITOR / WRITER / CO-PROTAGONIST / 84’ / 2016

Both protected and exposed by the camera, Beatrice and her film crew attempt to break the taboos around her family’s history of abuse. Her questioning pushes all the ancient removal mechanisms to the surface: everyone’s fear, denial and sense of guilt hit back, and soon Beatrice’s own intentions are questioned. Nevertheless, her presence pushes the entire family towards unavoidable questions: what are the consequences of those years of violence and psychological manipula-tion? Why is everyone blaming themselves? Would a confrontation pave the way to make peace with the past? More than an autobiographical documentary, the film is a kamikaze journey to face a family’s traumas: its intense confrontations are a unique occasion to sense all the efforts, the difficulties and the doubts that occur whenever a taboo is being broken, through a sincere but cruel exploration of the removal mechanisms surrounding domestic violence. The viewers find themselves inside a psychological thriller, in which each family member fights for their own truth: a nightmare, where everyone is innocent - and guilty at the same time.
